SEEDS at YorkU

York University campus in the snow

Professor Sapna Sharma founded SEEDS at YorkU, together with colleagues, staff and students from York University, in November 2015.

Our goals are to engage Syrian and other refugee children who have recently arrived in Canada with additional educational opportunities in science and math.  The purpose of our program is to help with the transition and integration of families settling into Canada.

We aim to:

  • Develop a science outreach program for kids aged 4-14 to learn about science and math.
  • Provide transportation and science outreach to Syrian and refugee families at Science Rendezvous held in May at the Markham Farmer’s Market;
  • To cultivate connections and friendships among newly-arrived government sponsored children to provide a sense of community within Canada

In the future, we also plan to develop a program for refugees who are Women in STEM.
